Have You Ever Wondered…?

Updated: Mar 24, 2021

what the building is that resides at the corner of Hainesport Mt. Laurel and Mt. Laurel roads? Straight across from the Evesham Meeting House, which dates from 1760, stands Farmers’ Hall!

Originally donated to the township by David Parnell, Farmers' Hall was built in 1866, as the plaque on the side of the building shows. The Progressive Farmers Club of Burlington County built the Greek Revival design building to hold their meetings. This club of farmers held two big exhibitions a year – a crop show and a poultry show. The club also worked as a cooperative when buying farming supplies like fertilizer and coal.

In 1904 the building was donated to Mt. Laurel Township for use as the town hall, courthouse and police station. The town hall remained at this location until it moved to the current building, which was built in 1972. When the building was renovated, the two-cell jail in the back was removed.

Farmers’ Hall was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Today, the Mount Laurel Historical Society uses the property to conduct meetings, house historical artifacts and information, and hold programs on various historical topics of local interest.
