There is a new playground at Elbo Park, thanks to Frank and Linda Falcone, 30-year residents of Mount Laurel. "Jessie's Playground", named after Falcones' daughter Jessie, who lost her battle with childhood leukemia in 2002, consists of playground equipment designed for two to five-year old children. The playground was dedicated to the park at a ceremony held on July 11th. Elbo Park is located at the intersection of Hainesport Mt. Laurel Road and Elbo Lane.
The Falcone family founded the Jessica Falcone Memorial Foundation in 2002, following Jessie's death at the age of 26 years old. While the Foundation raised $4,000 through the Foundation, it was not enough to cover all the expense. The Falcone's then donated $25,000 of their own money to fund the purchase of the equipment. Linda and Frank wanted to provide the children of Mount Laurel with something that commemorates the life of Jessie.
A flyer detailing Jessie’s story adorns the sign in front of the playground. Written by her parents, the dedication describes Jessie’s ordeal, her battles, and her positive approach to everything in life. The primary mission of the Foundation “is to celebrate life, courage, and love by granting scholarships to deserving students at Holy Cross High School, Jessie’s alma mater; by providing financial support to organizations truly involved in helping those in need and by offering service learning opportunities to the youth of our region.”
“It all comes down to this”, Jessie said. “Do for others.”
Mount Laurel originally purchased the land in 2007. In 2018, they officially opened Elbo Park, consisting of walking paths and benches. A memorial plaque bench bearing the name of Gen Lollasch, a well-known volunteer in the community, was dedicated in 2018. Over the years, Mount Laurel organizations such as the Green Team, Garden Club, and Rotary have contributed trees and/or services to beautify the park.
Speaking about the playground, Councilman Kurt Folcher said that "This playground, provided by Frank and Linda Falcone, ensures the memory of their daughter Jessie will always be present in the park. Jessie's legacy will provide a place of joy to generations of young children in Mount Laurel. As a town, we thank them for the honor and gift they have bestowed upon their community."
